Message from the President December 2020

Dear Members,
Greetings to you all. Hope you all keeping well and staying safe. I am sure many will be glad that things have improved a lot here in Melbourne and in the country as a whole. What a year 2020 has been, who would have thought we would have lockdowns, curfew and restrictions of all sorts here in Melbourne. Let’s hope we don’t have to endure those things again in 2021.
As for events in the club, not much happened in 2020 due to the virus lockdown. Hopefully in 2021 things will gradually ease and we may be able to meet in some sort of way. We will keep you posted.
In December the committee was lucky to have our Rector from Colombo join us via Zoom at a committee meeting. It was nice to hear his vision and plans for the school. We are lucky to have Fr. Andradi as our Rector and we hope things will slowly improve at college in many ways.
For a start we have the Learning Management Platform that has just been rolled out, which will be a great asset for the teachers and students during lockdown times and even after. Most teaching material will be online and parents will also be able to log in and see how their sons are doing in class. The next project that is about to happen is the introduction of Smartboards in the classrooms, starting from the A’Level and moving to the lower grades. This will be another great asset for the teachers in presenting classes to the students. The committee here in Melbourne has made a commitment to contribute towards the purchase of some Smartboards. We will keep you updated on this project and other projects in SL in the days ahead.
Take Care and God Bless.
Merry De La Zilwa [President]
together with the rest of the Committee.

Virtual Shades of Blue 2020
The Old Joes Melbourne Annual Dinner Dance which was meant to be held at Springvale Town Hall on Saturday 8th August was held in a different format this year due to the Corona Virus Shutdown. The present committee together with a few former committee members, some other Old Joes plus our special guest the SPC President Valentino Pereira gathered via ‘Zoom’ to celebrate the event.
The evening opened with Vice President Chamil Fernando leading the gathering in prayer, next President Merry De La Zilwa formally welcomed the group with a few words and update on where things stand now. This was followed by the singing of the college song lead by Choirmaster Darrel De Silva and then all present raising their glasses for a cheers up.
A chit chat followed the formal proceedings. Those present were involved in discussing various issues relevant to the present day and things happening at college now.
All in all it was a great catch-up. Hopefully things will settle down in the days ahead and we may be able to gather in 2021 for the Annual Dinner Dance. Till then take care and stay safe.
